Thanks for making the public records request. Has any reference to this email made it into the Bee or any TV news? We don't want this to go unnoticed in all the consternation about the deal falling apart.

Re: Slide 16, The Smoking Gun

If it's the Mayor's staff, intern or not -- and I doubt that it is -- this is going to blow up even bigger.

Everything we've been told, however, is that the Mayor and his staff had essentially no contact with the Kings.

Re: Slide 16, The Smoking Gun

City staff or mayor's staff, I wonder? One of those unpaid interns would make the perfect scapegoat.

Re: Sacramento Does Food!

I am asking ... good to know.

Sounds good. Tell me what time and where you're recording and Patrick's grilling and I'll show up when it's convenient ... or we can actually schedule something.

Are you familiar with RSS readers? I guess I really should just prefer that you check back to the site regularly, but with an RSS reader, google has a good one, you can just subscribe to the website and new content will pop up there whenever I write. That's how I follow you and Isaac and Current and a few dozen other things.

Re: Sacramento Does Food!

Thanks for the blog love Devin. Standing invitation, to the show and Patrick's house.

I'm going to say Asian Cafe on Norwood for best pho, if you're asking. I like comments, but hope you'll be liberal about banning bad trolls. I like my fonts a little darker, but maybe I am getting old... I'm loving the blog, by the way, checking it for updates frequently...

Re: When Four Maps is Not Enough

Thanks for the comment, Lori. I'm thrilled to get the opportunity for some back and forth.

Councilmembers Sheedy and Cohn are citizens of this fine city and more than welcome to engage in the process. But they should have done so in the same open, transparent process as the rest of us -- by submitting their maps to the commission.

I agree that Steve Hansen showed poor judgement in submitting his map anonymously. I believe that was the only map that was submitted anonymously. It would be perfectly reasonable for the Council to reject that map outright, if they believe it is too tainted, despite the fact that it was within the rules of the process they created. Eliminating the map still would leave three fully vetted maps to choose from.

Re: When Four Maps is Not Enough

Hey Devin,
As one who has served on "citizen" committee created by the school board, I agree about the need for the council to respect the process it set up. That said, it doesn't surprise me in the least that two council members decided to submit their own maps last night. Really, there is no way to take politics out of redistricting -- every group and individual that submitted a proposal after all was engaging in the political process -- and politics is what politicians do. How they choose to conduct themselves politically and to what ends are the ultimate measures by which their constituents should hold them accountable. The council itself now will have to decide to whether to respect the committee's work and that decision ultimately must be held to the tough scrutiny by the voters in the entire city.

But I am also wondering about the process itself. How many maps were submitted anonymously? Indeed, given the political nature of this endeavor, why were any maps allowed to be submitted anonymously? (Even if, as has been alleged, some council members submitted maps by proxy, names/group affiliation apparently were still attached to those proxy maps, which of course is why they were suspected to be proxy maps in the first place.) And although Mr. Hansen was acting within the rules, it seems regrettable and weird (heavy understatement) that a member of the citizen's redistricting commission was discussing and ultimately voting on a map he submitted without disclosing to his fellow members that the map in question was his handiwork. (I have no idea whether he supported his map or not...can only assume he did from the news stories out there today.) Sunshine is still the best disinfectant and all. We still have work to do in tearing down the curtains and letting that sunshine in.

Re: Americans Elect: An Innovative Way to Think in the Same Old Way?

Maybe you should write to them and offer your services, Devin!
